Testing a 1440p Monitor for Dead Pixels

1440p is the most popular resolution for gaming monitors — 27-inch IPS and VA panels at 144–240 Hz dominate the mid-range. With 3.7 million pixels across the panel, a single defect is a small target. At a normal 60–70 cm viewing distance, a dead pixel on a 27-inch 1440p monitor is visible but not immediately obvious — especially against colored backgrounds.

Test systematically: go full screen, set brightness to maximum, and dim the room. Spend at least five seconds on each color. Black reveals bright stuck pixels; white reveals dark dead pixels. Red, green, and blue expose sub-pixel faults where one of the three color channels has failed — these show as a slightly off-color dot rather than a fully dark or bright pixel.

Most 1440p gaming monitors — ASUS ROG, LG UltraGear, Samsung Odyssey, Gigabyte — follow ISO 13406-2 Class II. A single dead pixel rarely qualifies for automatic warranty replacement, but one visible bright pixel near the center of the screen is worth reporting within the first 30 days. What resolution is 1440p exactly?+
1440p (QHD or "2K") refers to 2560 × 1440 pixels — exactly four times the pixel count of 720p and 1.78 times that of 1080p. At 27 inches, this gives 108 PPI, which most people find the ideal balance of sharpness and comfortable viewing distance.
Is 1440p the same as 2K?+
"2K" is a loose marketing term. Technically, DCI 2K is 2048 × 1080 (cinema standard). Consumer monitors marketed as "2K" are almost always 2560 × 1440 (QHD). For dead pixel testing the distinction doesn't matter — the test fills your native resolution regardless.
How many dead pixels does a 1440p monitor have to have for warranty replacement?+
A 2560 × 1440 panel has roughly 3.7 million pixels. Under ISO 13406-2 Class II (~2 bright defects per million pixels), about 7 bright defects are technically permitted. In practice most brands approve warranty service at 3–5 visible defects. Dell XPS and Alienware models replace for even one bright pixel.
