Nintendo Switch Dead Pixel Policy — Switch 2, Switch & 3DS
Nintendo dead pixel policy — overview
Nintendo is one of the least consumer-friendly manufacturers on pixel defects. Nintendo explicitly states in their published support documentation that a small number of dead or stuck pixels is a normal characteristic of LCD displays — not a manufacturing defect. This means a single dead pixel on a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or 3DS does not automatically qualify for a free repair or replacement.
For the Switch 2, Nintendo's approach is expected to be the same — check nintendo.com/support for current Switch 2 warranty documentation as the product is newer and policy details may be updated.
| Device | Display type | Single pixel covered? | Fix possible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | LCD (IPS) | Typically no — verify at nintendo.com/support | Software cycling may help stuck pixels |
| Nintendo Switch (original) | LCD (IPS) | Typically no — single pixel within tolerance | Software cycling may help stuck pixels |
| Nintendo Switch OLED | OLED (Samsung) | Typically no — single pixel within tolerance | Software less effective on OLED stuck pixels |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | LCD (IPS) | Typically no — single pixel within tolerance | Software cycling may help stuck pixels |
| Nintendo 3DS / 3DS XL | TN LCD (dual screen) | Typically no — single pixel within tolerance | TN panel — software cycling + pressure method possible |
Try fixing a stuck pixel before contacting Nintendo
If your pixel shows colour rather than appearing black on a white screen, it is likely stuck rather than dead — and stuck pixels can sometimes be fixed. The Switch (LCD models) and 3DS use IPS and TN panels respectively, both of which respond to rapid colour cycling. Run the pixel fixer for 10–20 minutes with the zone over the stuck pixel. The Switch OLED is less likely to respond to software cycling.
Nintendo 3DS dead pixel — what you can try
The 3DS uses TN LCD panels on both screens. TN panels have lower liquid crystal viscosity than IPS, making stuck pixels more responsive to cycling and the pressure method. The casing around the 3DS hinge area also makes it easier to apply light targeted pressure to the back of the panel — a technique some users report success with on the bottom screen in particular.
When to contact Nintendo Support
Even though Nintendo's policy allows for pixel defects within tolerance, you can still contact Nintendo Support if:
- →You have multiple dead or stuck pixels, or a visible cluster
- →A pixel defect appeared within days of purchase (manufacturing defect argument)
- →You are within the retailer return window — this is your fastest path to replacement
- →You purchased from a retailer with a generous return policy (e.g. Amazon)

Test your Nintendo Switch display now
Open this page on your Switch browser (or phone next to the console) and cycle through colours. White background is best for finding dead (black) pixels.

Frequently asked questions
Does Nintendo warranty cover dead pixels on Switch?+
Nintendo's official position is that a small number of dead or stuck pixels is a normal characteristic of LCD and OLED displays. A single dead pixel typically does not qualify for warranty replacement. Multiple defects or a defect that appeared within days of purchase may qualify — contact Nintendo Support for an assessment.
Does Nintendo Switch 2 have a dead pixel warranty?+
The Nintendo Switch 2 carries the same general approach as the original Switch. Check nintendo.com/support for current Switch 2 warranty terms as the product is newer and policy documentation may be updated.
Does the 3DS dead pixel policy allow replacement?+
Nintendo 3DS carries the same pixel defect approach — a small number is within display tolerance and is not covered. The 3DS TN LCD panels are more susceptible to stuck pixels; software cycling and careful pressure application may resolve them.
Can stuck pixels on Nintendo Switch be fixed without sending it in?+
Stuck pixels on Switch LCD models (original, Lite) can sometimes be fixed using rapid colour cycling. Switch OLED stuck pixels are less responsive to software methods. Try the stuck pixel fixer on this site for 10–20 minutes before contacting Nintendo.
