How Dead Pixels Look on Android AMOLED Screens

The vast majority of Android flagship phones — Samsung Galaxy S and Z series, Google Pixel 6 and above, OnePlus 8 and above — use AMOLED or Dynamic AMOLED panels. On these screens, each pixel generates its own light independently. A dead pixel is a pinpoint of absolute black visible on every background color. A stuck pixel glows red, green, or blue at full brightness regardless of what is on screen.

Budget Android phones often still use LCD panels. On LCD, a dead pixel blocks the backlight but doesn't eliminate it, making the dot appear dark grey rather than pure black — and nearly invisible on a black test background. If you're testing an LCD Android, pay close attention to the white and red screens where dead pixels stand out most clearly.

Dead Pixels on Foldable Phones — Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip

Foldable displays introduce a unique stress point: the crease. The inner display of a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip flexes thousands of times per year. Earlier generations (Z Fold 4, Z Flip 4 and below) occasionally developed stuck pixels at or near the crease after extended use — a result of micro-fractures in the OLED layer from repeated bending.

Samsung has improved crease durability in the Z Fold 6, Z Fold 7, Z Flip 6, and Z Flip 7, but it remains a potential failure point. When testing a foldable, run the test with the device fully open and pay extra attention to the crease area — stuck pixels there appear as a bright dot or short line segment along the fold.

Crease-area pixel failures on foldables are covered under Samsung's standard warranty when they occur without physical damage. Report before the 12-month mark — Samsung Care+ extends this to 24 months and covers accidental damage.

Dead Pixel Warranty Policies by Android Brand

Unlike PC monitor standards, Android phone manufacturers don't publish exact dead pixel thresholds. Coverage is handled case-by-case by support staff. The table below summarises the general approach for major brands:

BrandPolicy summaryContact
Samsung (Galaxy S / Z series)Case-by-case; no published minimum. Single bright pixel near center usually qualifies. 12–24 month warranty depending on region.Samsung Members app → Get Help
Google PixelOne-year limited warranty. Single dead pixel typically approved. Preferred Care adds 2 years + accidental damage.support.google.com/store
OnePlus12-month warranty. Dead pixels qualify as manufacturing defects. Return within 15 days for easiest resolution.OnePlus Support app
Xiaomi / Redmi12-month warranty. Minimum threshold varies by region — some markets require 3+ defective pixels.mi.com/global/service

How to Fix a Dead Pixel on Android

If your pixel is stuck on a color (red, green, blue, or white) rather than fully dark, rapid color cycling can sometimes restore it. Open our stuck pixel fix tool in your Android browser and run it for 10–20 minutes with the screen at full brightness. Position the repair zone over the affected pixel and leave it running.

The pressure method — powering off the device, placing a folded microfibre cloth over the stuck pixel, and applying gentle pressure for 30 seconds before powering back on — has anecdotal reports of success on stuck pixels. Do not use enough pressure to leave permanent pressure marks on the display.

Truly dead pixels (permanently dark, no light output at all) cannot be fixed in software or by pressure. If the phone is within its warranty period, a screen replacement is the only reliable solution.

Android Dead Pixel FAQ

How many dead pixels will Samsung replace a phone for?+
Samsung's standard policy allows a small number of pixel defects under ISO 13406-2 Class II, but in practice a single bright stuck pixel near the center — especially on a new Galaxy S or Z-series device — is often enough for a warranty repair. Report within the first 30 days for the strongest case.
Are dead pixels common on foldable phones?+
Foldable displays are more susceptible to pixel stress at the fold crease. A small number of users report stuck pixels appearing at the crease after sustained use, particularly on older fold generations. Samsung covers these under warranty when they appear without physical damage.
What is the difference between a dead pixel and AMOLED burn-in on Android?+
A dead or stuck pixel is a fixed dot at a specific location that never changes regardless of what is displayed. AMOLED burn-in is a faint ghost of a repeated image (navigation bar, notification icons) visible across the screen at low brightness. Burn-in develops gradually; dead pixels appear suddenly.
Can a dead pixel on an Android phone be fixed without replacing the screen?+
Stuck pixels — frozen on a color — sometimes respond to rapid color cycling. Use our fix tool for 10–20 minutes. Truly dead pixels (permanently dark) cannot be recovered in software. If the phone is under warranty, a screen replacement is the reliable fix.
How do I report a dead pixel to Google for a Pixel phone?+
Contact Google Support through the Google Store app or support.google.com/store. Google offers a one-year limited warranty and an extended protection plan (Preferred Care). A single dead pixel near the center of a Pixel screen is typically approved for replacement display or device exchange.
My Android phone has a dead pixel after a software update — is that possible?+
Software updates cannot cause dead pixels. If a pixel appears stuck immediately after an update, it is a hardware defect that was already present or triggered by heat during the update process. The update timing is coincidental — report it as a hardware defect under warranty.
