What Does a Pixel Test Check For?
A pixel test is a broader check than most people realize. “Dead pixel” is the common term, but there are actually four types of pixel defect — and each shows up differently depending on which background color you are using. The solid-color cycling approach catches all of them.
| Defect type | How it appears | Fixable? | Warranty? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead pixel | Always black, on every background | No | Yes — check brand threshold |
| Stuck pixel | Fixed color — red, green, blue, or mix | Often | Yes — same thresholds as dead |
| Hot pixel | Always white — all 3 sub-pixels on | Sometimes | Yes — counted as bright defect |
| Sub-pixel defect | Slightly off-color dot — only one R/G/B failed | Rarely | Counts as partial defect in ISO standard |
How to Run a Pixel Test
- 1
Go full screen
Press Full Screen or F11. This removes browser chrome and ensures you test pixels at the very edge of your display.
- 2
Dim the room
Ambient light washes out faint defects. Testing in a dim room makes stuck pixels much easier to spot, especially on dark backgrounds.
- 3
Cycle through all colors
Use the color buttons or Auto Cycle. Each background color reveals a different failure mode — black finds hot/stuck pixels, white finds dead pixels, and R/G/B find sub-pixel failures.
- 4
Scan methodically
Work top to bottom, left to right. Spend 5–10 seconds per color. On large or ultrawide monitors, scan in thirds — the edges are easy to miss.
Pixel Test for Different Devices
This tool works on any display that can run a browser. Different device types need slightly different approaches:
Monitor
Test from 30–50 cm at 4K, further for 1080p. Use F11 for full screen. Check our monitor-specific guide.
Monitor pixel test →Laptop
Same as monitor. Test from 30–40 cm. MacBook and MacBook Pro Retina pixels are very small — move close.
Laptop pixel test →TV
Test from 1 metre first to find defects, then from normal viewing distance to judge visibility.
TV pixel test →Testing a phone? deadpixelphone.pro has a dedicated mobile pixel test optimized for small touchscreens. For Kindle, camera sensors, or VR headsets, visit deadpixeldevice.pro for device-specific guides. For a full monitor test suite beyond pixel testing, MonitorTest Pro runs 20 additional tests including backlight uniformity and ghosting.
