What Does a Pixel Test Check For?

A pixel test is a broader check than most people realize. “Dead pixel” is the common term, but there are actually four types of pixel defect — and each shows up differently depending on which background color you are using. The solid-color cycling approach catches all of them.

How to Run a Pixel Test

    Go full screen

    Press Full Screen or F11. This removes browser chrome and ensures you test pixels at the very edge of your display.

    Dim the room

    Ambient light washes out faint defects. Testing in a dim room makes stuck pixels much easier to spot, especially on dark backgrounds.

    Cycle through all colors

    Use the color buttons or Auto Cycle. Each background color reveals a different failure mode — black finds hot/stuck pixels, white finds dead pixels, and R/G/B find sub-pixel failures.

    Scan methodically

    Work top to bottom, left to right. Spend 5–10 seconds per color. On large or ultrawide monitors, scan in thirds — the edges are easy to miss.

What does a pixel test check for?+
A pixel test checks your screen for defective pixels — any pixel that is not displaying the correct color. This includes dead pixels (always black), stuck pixels (fixed on one color), hot pixels (all sub-pixels stuck on — appears white), and sub-pixel defects (one of the three R/G/B sub-pixels failed). The full-color cycling approach catches all four types.
Is a pixel test the same as a dead pixel test?+
"Pixel test" and "dead pixel test" are commonly used interchangeably. Technically, a pixel test is broader — it catches all defect types including stuck pixels and hot pixels, not just dead (black) pixels. Both terms refer to the same process: cycling through solid colors to find any pixel that does not match the expected color.
How long does a pixel test take?+
A thorough pixel test takes about two to three minutes. Spend five to ten seconds on each of the seven test colors (black, white, red, green, blue, yellow, gray), scanning your full screen methodically. On large monitors or ultrawide panels, allow a bit longer — scan in sections.
