How to Scan an Ultrawide Monitor for Dead Pixels

Standard dead pixel tests assume you can cover the screen in one visual sweep. Ultrawide monitors — especially 34-inch 21:9 and 49-inch 32:9 panels — are wide enough that your eyes physically cannot focus on the full width at once from a normal viewing distance. A dead pixel at the far left edge is invisible when you are looking at the centre.

Use a zone-scanning method. With the screen at a solid color, divide it mentally into three columns and examine each in turn: move your eyes in slow horizontal strips, top to bottom, within each zone. Spend at least 10 seconds per zone per color. Check white and black for the most obvious defects, then work through red, green, and blue to catch sub-pixel faults.

On curved ultrawide monitors (1000R–1800R), the edges curve away from your line of sight. Lean slightly left and right during the edge checks — the curvature can mask a stuck pixel that's bright but at a shallow viewing angle.

Ultrawide Dead Pixel Warranty and Fixes

Ultrawide monitors carry the same ISO 13406-2 Class II classification as standard widescreen panels. A 3440 × 1440 display technically permits up to 9 bright and 9 dark defects before the manufacturer is required to act. Most buyers and support teams treat a single visible bright pixel near the center as a de facto defect worth addressing — particularly within the first 30 days.

LG UltraGear, Samsung Odyssey, and ASUS ROG are the dominant ultrawide brands. All three offer online RMA processes. Divide the screen into three vertical zones — left, centre, right — and scan each separately. Ultrawide panels are wide enough that your peripheral vision misses the edges when you focus on the centre. Take 10–15 seconds per color per zone, moving your eyes in horizontal strips.
Are dead pixels more common on ultrawide monitors?+
Larger panels have more pixels, so there is a slightly higher statistical chance of a defect. A 3440 × 1440 ultrawide has 4.95 million pixels — about a third more than a standard 1440p panel. Manufacturing yields have improved significantly, and defects on modern ultrawide monitors are uncommon.

Yes. The test fills your entire browser canvas regardless of aspect ratio. On a 32:9 panel (5120 × 1440 or 3840 × 1080), make sure your browser is in full-screen mode (F11) so the color fills edge to edge.
