AMOLED vs IPS: what to look for
AMOLED tablets (Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra)
- → Black screen is true black — stuck pixels pop as bright coloured dots
- → Dead pixels are absolute black on white — easy to spot
- → Software cycling less effective than on IPS panels
IPS LCD tablets (Surface, Fire, Pixel Tab)
- → Black screen has slight grey glow — stuck pixels may blend in
- → White screen is clearest for finding dead (black) pixels
- → Software cycling works well for stuck pixels on IPS

Tablet warranty policies — what each brand covers
Most tablet manufacturers follow ISO 13406-2 Class II — a small number of pixel defects is within tolerance and does not automatically trigger a warranty replacement. Retailer return windows (14–30 days) are usually your fastest path to a replacement if you find a defect on a new tablet.
Samsung Galaxy Tab
ISO Class II — single pixel within tolerance. Contact Samsung Support at samsung.com/support.
Microsoft Surface
Case-by-case assessment. Surface Complete with Accidental Damage covers hardware defects. Visit support.microsoft.com.
Amazon Fire
1-year warranty. Amazon customer service is responsive — contact within the 30-day return window for best outcome.
Google Pixel Tablet
1-year warranty. Google Store has a 15-day return window. Contact Google Support via store.google.com.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test a tablet for dead pixels?+
Open the dead pixel test in your tablet browser at maximum brightness. Go full screen and cycle through solid colours — 20–30 seconds per colour. A dot that stays black on white is a dead pixel; a dot showing colour on black is stuck.
Does Samsung Galaxy Tab warranty cover dead pixels?+
Galaxy Tab displays follow ISO 13406-2 Class II. A single pixel is within tolerance. Multiple defects or a cluster will generally qualify. Contact Samsung Support with photos. Use the retailer return window if available.
Does Microsoft Surface warranty cover dead pixels?+
Surface devices follow a similar policy to ISO Class II. A single dead pixel typically does not qualify. Microsoft assesses claims case-by-case — contact support.microsoft.com or visit a Microsoft Store.
Amazon Fire tablet dead pixel — is it covered?+
Amazon's 1-year warranty covers manufacturing defects. Amazon customer service is generally responsive — contacting within the 30-day return window often results in a replacement regardless of pixel count.
